Interview: MJ

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

MJ: It's ya girl MJ aka M. Jean M and I'm a rapper currently based out of Houston, TX. Been in and out of music nearly my whole life and finally became dedicated to it back in 2011. Born in Redondo Beach, CA but raised in Pensacola, FL. My music is a multifaceted. I have the ability to get you lit one moment, then force you to dissect your environment the next. I released my self produced debut album, "Live Through Me" in 2014, followed by a mixtape entitled "MEEZUS" in 2016. Both can be listened to on my Soundcloud but I am getting my music on major streaming platforms as well. How would you describe your sound/style?

MJ: Both my sound and style is hard hitting and straight to the point. Full of bass and sass. There is elements of trap mixed in old school Hip Hop. Who are your current inspirations in the music industry?

MJ: Recently, I've been getting into some Roddy Ricch. His music is made with heart. And then of course there is the ultimate H-Town hottie in Meagan Thee Stallion. Her come up is extremely inspirational to me. What are you currently working on?

MJ: I've been working on an EP that showcases my growth as an artist. A sample body of work that proves I will be a force to be reckoned with. What is the concept behind your latest project?

MJ: The concept is to take my fans and listeners on a rollercoaster full of emotions. My EP features a variety of production and showcases my full potential as a major rapper in the industry. Recently, I've released two lead singles, "Falling" and "Houston Strong". "Falling" is a slower track inspired by reggae and the Carribean style. It's a song for all the lovers out there.

"Houston Strong" is a hard hitting serving to be the anthem for Clutch City. It hits out at the hard reality of urban life while celebrating the overcoming of trials and tribulations especially here in H-Town. Any plans on touring to promote your latest project?

MJ: YES. Performing is a major aspect of artistry that I have been dying to tackle. Been booking several open mics and working my way up to venues. What are your must-haves when you're in the studio creating?

MJ: My phone, a bottle of water, and my earbuds.

Will you be collaborating with any other artists in the future?

MJ: Yes. Throughout my artist development I've been meeting with several extremely talented people who I desire to work with on my project. In addition, I want to collaborate with more singers both inside and out the city. I want to expand my musical territory. Do you think your music is mostly enjoyed more for the beats or for the lyrical flow and content?

MJ: Both. If I had to choose, my lyrical flow. What's your all-time favorite song?

MJ: Human Nature- Michael Jackson What is your dream venue to perform at?

MJ: Coachella. The Grammys. Anything else you wanna add?
