Interview: The Newlanders

March 30, 2020

Can you tell us a little about your band?

The Newlanders: We started play as a band in 2009, but we started writing songs and doing it seriously in 2017.

How long have you been creating songs?

The Newlanders: We’ve been creating songs since 2012, but because of many line-up changes, we’ve started writing and recording hard in 2016. So our first record came out in 2017.

What inspired you to get started?

The Newlanders: As many young bands we started playing during the high school times, inspired by the dream of being rockstars.
Doing our stuff and rehearsals in our garages and thinking about just having fun, girls and hit the big time.
Also we were all studying in music schools, and our teachers directed us to a certain kind of artists and music.

How would you describe your sound/style?

The Newlanders: We don’t like to define our music. The roots are rock of course, but we try every time to include elements and suggestions from other genres.

Who are your current inspirations in the music industry?

The Newlanders: Even if we come from Italy, we try to have a global vision of the modern music business. So we’re oriented on british and american music panorama the most.

How do you go about writing a song and what is your process?

The Newlanders: Our singer Vike writes words and music in an embryonic phase. Then we all together build the song, in a second process. A big part of the writing and recording process happen in our rehearsal room. Then, when we go to the studio, it’s only about recording and caring the details.

What are you currently working on?

The Newlanders: We are working now on our second album.

What is the concept behind your latest project?

The Newlanders: Our last project, that is also our first official record is called “Uno”, that means “one” in Italian. It can have multiple meanings. The very first reason is that is our first record. We were heavy inspired by the Uno theory, that says everything is “one”, and everything is connected by a unique energy form. Uno everything contains and to which everything returns. Also for us it means freedom, and music for us is all about that.

Any plans on touring to promote your latest project?

The Newlanders: We’re working now on our second record, and of course we will do a tour, that is what we prefer of our job.

What is the best piece of advice in this business you actually used?

The Newlanders: We use social media and YouTube the most.

Do you think your music is mostly enjoyed more for the beats or for the lyrical flow and content?

The Newlanders: I think there are so many forces interact with each other. And is the perfect equilibrium between all the parts that makes a song great. There are songs more groove based and other more melody based, but I think the most important thing is to valorize the meaning of the song, and that can happen in so many ways. There are no limits.

How do you feel about the current state of music?

The Newlanders: We can compare this transformation moment we live in, with the born of the vinyl or the music television revolution.
I think we are witnessing to an extraordinary moment, talking about the way we listen and the way we absorb music.

When you’re not in the studio, What do you like to do for fun and relaxation?

The Newlanders: We do so many things individually. We like sports, cinema, science and also we do other jobs.

If you could work with any producer who would it be?

The Newlanders: There are so many names we could say, some of them are: Rick Rubin, Butch Vig, Brendan O’Brien, Joe Barresi.

When performing live what are some of the things you do to get the crowd involved?

The Newlanders: We just do what we do best : play.

What can we expect from you in the future?

The Newlanders: I think our next album will something very different from our last one.

Where can the fans check out your music news?

The Newlanders: We are on every social network and also on our website thenewlanders.com.

We are The Newlanders, we explore new lands.
