Interview: Semicold

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Semicold: So I’m a solo artist, musician, and producer! I came up with the name Semicold while I was producing songs and thinking about the past. I love winter as I’ve been snowboarding all my life and I love the white snow that stacks up high here in Idaho. So I knew I wanted to come up with a name that incorporated my love for winter. I also remembered back a few years ago that someone told me that I was a semi-cold person after having to go through a tough relationship and I actually really liked the idea of naming this artist persona of mine Semicold! So I went with it. How long have you been creating songs?

Semicold: I first started messing around with making my own music in 2014. I finished my first complete song in 2016 and uploaded it to SoundCloud! What inspired you to get started?

Semicold: Well, I love all music. And I wanted to be like my inspirations and make music that others would enjoy regardless of how many people would listen to it. San Holo is one of my many favorite artists. What he’s done has really inspired me to continue to keep trying and keep going. He made his own record label “bitbird” and it’s insanely amazing and filled with such talented artists. So in 2018, I made my own record label “coldcrusaders” too and we regularly release music! It’s really fun to be able to work with so many amazing artists! It really keeps me going. How would you describe your sound/style?

Semicold: It’s very diverse! I mainly make music in lots of different EDM genres but I also really love piano and orchestral pieces. So I just kinda make whatever I feel like making at the time! Who are your current inspirations in the music industry?

Semicold: I have SO MANY. But right now, my top 5 would definitely be San Holo, Said The Sky, Porter Robinson, Ngyn, and tofû. But I have LOTS more. How do you go about writing a song and what is your process?

Semicold: I just start playing the piano and I’ll get inspiration to start something but I don’t always finish it all the way to the end. I have lots of unfinished projects but I save them for when I can find the right inspiration for each. Once I do get something rolling, I relax and take my time. I make sure it’s not super generic and that it’s something enjoyable! What are you currently working on?

Semicold: I'm currently working on a bunch of new singles to send to record labels and I’m also working on my second album, WARFORGREY, which is part of a Dark, Grey, Light trilogy! What is the concept behind your latest project?

Semicold: So, i released my first album which was huge. It has a lot of tracks. Most of them are older that I had on SoundCloud and I removed them. The fans that loved the songs asked me if I could release them so I decided to include them in my first album titled, INTO DARKNESS. I’m planning on making 2 more albums. WARFORGREY is the second album and I’ve already finished some tracks for it! The title represents the controversy over grey areas of life. There’s so many black and white people out there that don’t believe there’s a grey area that exists. There’s Darkness, Light, and a in-between area. Any plans on touring to promote your latest project?

Semicold: I wish! I’d love to play live but I have yet to do so. I’ve worked on 2 different types of live shows so far and I’m planning on doing them at some point in the future. What did you buy with your first check off music?

Semicold: More plugins!! What are your must-haves when you're in the studio creating?

Semicold: Water, any kind of snacks, and good music playing to help inspire me when I’m working on things. What is the best piece of advice in this business you actually used?

Semicold: Keep doing what you love regardless of what you get in return. Will you be collaborating with any other artists in the future?

Semicold: Yes! I have some artists that I’m already working with for my second album and I have some artists remixing some of my songs as well! Do you think your music is mostly enjoyed more for the beats or for the lyrical flow and content?

Semicold: Not exactly sure. I just have a good vibe in my songs every now and then! What area do you need to improve on in regards to your career? (Example: Better production, Delivery, Stage presence, etc..)

Semicold: Probably a better online/media presence so more people can be exposed to my music! What's your all-time favorite song?

Semicold: Can’t say cause I have so many! I’ve compiled my favorite tracks into Spotify playlists that you can find on my Spotify artist profile though! So hard to just choose just one! In your opinion who is the most influential and successful artist in your genre today and why?

Semicold: Well EDM or Dance/Electronic has so many amazing artists but I believe Marshmello is the most influential and successful. Everyone knows him and he has a decent variety of tracks. Regardless if you’re a fan of him or not, you can’t deny that he’s come a long ways and he’s very talented and successful. Who has been some of your favorite artists that you’ve been able to work with?

Semicold: Definitely any of the artists in my record label! I’ve also enjoyed working with Syndice, LMR, DecemberAir, TreAcapelica, and Dvnity. How do you feel about the current state of music?

Semicold: I still need to find my “sound”. I want to sound more unique and sound more professional. For example, DROELOE has a very distinct sound which I love and admire. That’s something I really want and am trying to do. What is your main goal as far as music?

Semicold: To provide good music for others to enjoy and establish EDM here in Idaho USA. Who would you say your music relates to the most?

Semicold: Those that enjoy unique styles of music and for those that just genuinely love music in general! What separates you from other artists? (What makes you different?)

Semicold: I’m very personal with my fans and I love them all. I’ll respond to everyone. I also live in the middle of no one where everyone loves country music and nothing else! I definitely stand out in the crowd! XD When you’re not in the studio, What do you like to do for fun and relaxation?

Semicold: Find new music and try to act as cool as Chet Porter. If you could work with any producer who would it be?

Semicold: It’s so hard to choose!! But honestly I’d have to say San Holo. I absolutely love him & bitbird. What’s the biggest highlight of your career thus far?

Semicold: Probably my single I released with Bliss Corporation which was the record label that released “I’m Blue (Da Ba Dee)” by Eiffel 65. What is your dream venue to perform at?

Semicold: Red Rocks!! I’d specifically like to just have my own red rocks show!!

What artist music are you currently a fan of?

Semicold: Lots. twenty one pilots, Porter Robinson, Alison Wonderland, Chet Porter, San Holo, DROELOE, Taska Black, Duskus, tofû, Ngyn, Otherwise Fine, and so so many more. What can we expect from you in the future?

Semicold: 2 more albums at some point. Not sure when. And definitely more singles! And I’ll always be updating my Spotify playlists! Just DM me songs on Instagram and I’ll add them if they’re bangers! Anything else you wanna add?

Semicold: I love you all! And if you’re reading this and you’re not familiar with my music, I love you too. Stay vibrant! Blessed (100↑%) Where can the fans check out your music news?
