Interview: Kween E

March 30, 2020

We recently had the chance to get to know Kween E from Chicago! Check out the interview below.

Q: Can you tell us about yourself?

A: "My name is Tamara Jackson, aka Tamara Yvonne, aka Kween E, (formally Kween Equaliti) but I chose to just reflect on the E, as it represents Essence, Einstein/genius and more, a Chicago native, currently residing in Atlanta Ga, I'm a mom of 5, and an all out go getter....

Q: How long have you been creating music?

A: "Well, I've been writing lyrics, short stories, skits, etc. Since I was about 14 or 15 years old! I started writing books in 2007, and I veered back towards the music creating a few short years ago....

Q: What inspired you to get started?

A: "Well, for those that are not aware, but I am upwards of 40 y/o. So calculating the time, my era falls under MC Lite, Queen Latifah, Ms. Melody, Salt n Pepper, and likenesses of them, including Yo-yo (don't try to play me out)😂. And at that time female artists were heavily bringing that superwoman feel and energy to the game. So like usually every girl was drawn to that, and by all means we found our identities and dignity within them....

Q: Who are your current inspirations in the music?

A: "Well honestly, there are so many, but off the top I would definitely have to say Missy Elliott, Snoop Dogg, Nipsey Hussle, and Queen Latifah, and I love her new joint with Jadakiss (Forever a legend).....

Q: How do you go about writing a song? What is your process?

A: "I get my ideas and inspiration from all around, from things I'd witness, etc. And at times it could start with the lyrics, and other times it starts with the sounds I would hear, that intrigues me! "However when I start with the lyrics I feel more in tuned with the project (s)...

Q: What are you currently working on?

A: "Currently I'm working on my second "hood project", a single/song focusing on the love for and celebrating the hood, or "urban community". Nipsey for the most part was about the unity of the community, or "hood" and that's something I strongly relate to, so with that being said, I said my love for my hood is so strong, so I imagine I am not alone in this, therefore I wanted to create something for hoods all over the world, that would have others to also celebrate their hoods, and the love they have for them....

Q: What is the concept behind your latest project?

A: "Once again, I am whole-heartedly focusing on the love for my "hood" which is what Nipsey inspired me to do, I don't intend to base my entire career on the hood influence (if I may), but that is where my heart is at this time. "So I almost felt compelled to create for my hood....

Q: What is the best advice in this business you actually used?

A: "Well, that's almost self-explanatory, when Nip visited me (spiritually or "supernaturally in my dream) following his death. He did remind me that the marathon goes on. "So I picked up the torch, and got back on track, or in the game and started sprinting. And despite my struggles and obstacles, I still move forward...

Q: How do you feel about the current state of music?

A: "I like the vibes or waves, however the patterns are typically the same, depending on genre, "I guess! "In my opinion it needs to be more substance in the music today, more consciousness, and meaning. Mostly artists rap about money, cars, clothes, hoes... But then again coming from my generation, that is probably expected, lol. "I do rock with alot of these artists today, like Migos, Cardi (of course)🥰, Roddy Rich, Lil Baby, Da Baby, and more! I'm hoping to see in the future where old skool artists collab with new skool artists, and they harmonize their creatives, and it focuses on, or be about both old skool and new skool vibes/sound....

Q: What separates you from other artists?

A: "Well, I'm not sure, being is that I don't compare myself to any other artist outchea. "I just love what I do, and I focus accordingly. I hardly even follow the media, etc. Because it's my belief that that opens the door for comparison, I just stay focused on my art, and #DiveAndDeliver. Ever heard of the saying; "to each his own?🤷🏾‍♀️

Q: When you're not in the studio what do you like to do for fun/relaxation?

A: "It's ironic that this question is posed to me, because I was just explaining to someone, that artists all over should be respected for their privacy. As a performer, when I/artists perform, that is the audience's time, etc. However we have personal lives, it's not always about signing autographs, or pleasing the public or others, sometimes it's about me or alone time, I like to call it #NoneArtistMode.😂💯🤷🏾‍♀️ "I remember watching in the news one time the media wanted to give 2 Chainz, or it was Gucci Mane flack (sometimes I get them mixed up) lol, but it was ridicule behind him not wanting to sign autographs, etc. Because he was out enjoying his time with his girl or something. 🤦🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️ "But I like to spend time at home, perhaps watch movies, maybe do an outing, read, cook, etc. But it's about that me time....

Q: If you could work with any producer who would it be?

A: "Omg... Who would not want to work with DJ Khalid? That of course would be my ultimate, but I got my eye on a few others, (super producer/Atlanta), and more....

Q: What music artist are you currently a fan of?

A: "Well once again, Queen Latifah, Missy, Cardi, Remi, Snoop, and of course Nipsey and many many more! "I got my ultimate push from Nip though, so it goes without saying; #TheMarathonContinues....

Q: When performing and crowd sings along how does that energy make you feel?

A: "On top of the world best sums it up for me! I am just ecstatic to know and see that I have folks engaging and rocking with me. They like what I do and bring, and that spells nothing less than "I AM IMPORTANT! To me....

Q: What can we expect from you in the future?

A: "Well, I have a large variety of preferences in music, etc. "So with that being said I can't say particularly what's next genre wise! "However as I continue to hone my craft better, and continue to create, you shall expect me bringing/giving you all the best of me....

Q: Anything else you want to add?

A: "Sure, I do have a project that focuses on triumphing after difficulties. "I dealt with sexual abuse, domestic violence, mental illness, homelessness, but didn't let that break me or keep me down! "I can't stress enough the message that Nip left us or etched into our minds, hearts, and realities, but I want to add that there are going to be some pain and disappointments along the way, during the process, but we can't give up, expect them, and roll with them....

Q: Where can fans check out your music?

A: "Currently my music is available on Spotify, SoundCloud, Apple Music, Deezer, iTunes, 2Hotradio, with more platforms soon to come!
